Kitten Survives Tangle With Lawnmower
Alexandria Times, VA - 14 hours ago
If cats are born with 9 lives then a tiny 2 month old buff tabby kitten named Joe is down to 8. This lucky little guy was brought into the Vola Lawson Animal Shelter recently after going a couple of rounds with an industrial lawnmower.
A good Samaritan found the tiny kitten near death, his little ears mangled and deep lacerations on his head. After treatment at a local animal hospital which resulted in reconstructive surgery and complete removal of his outer ears, the kitten was surrendered to the Shelter.
The Animal Welfare League of Alexandria, which operates the shelter, accepted the badly injured kitten and placed him into their foster care program. Joe is recovering nicely from his traumatic ordeal. Despite his horrific injuries he is a sweet kitten who is now beginning to feel well enough to purr, play with toys and snuggle with his foster family.

Understanding Cats and Kittens
In the ongoing battle of cats versus dogs, pet owners continue to sing the praises of their animal of choice. While dogs are vastly considered to be the more family-friendly pet, cats have their own equally enthusiastic fan club that can easily rattle off the attributes of their feline in-residence. The truth is that cats – loyal, loving, and often misunderstood – are just as popular in the world of pets as their canine counterparts.
The history of cats goes back nearly 9,000 years to ancient civilizations. Always the skilled predators, cats were often relied upon to keep vermin at bay. But there is also speculation that cats were kept as house pets as early as 7,500 BC. We do know that ancient Egyptian civilizations revered cats – so much so that anyone convicted of killing a cat was put to death. Cats were often even mummified along with their owners.

Health Benefits to Owning Cats
04:40 PM CST on Thursday, February 21, 2008
MINNEAPOLIS – Here, kitty kitty…. A new study suggests cat owners are less likely to die of a heart attack or stroke than people who, well, don't own cats. And no, dogs don't do the same trick. The study, by researchers at the University of Minnesota, found that feline-less people were 30 to 40 percent more likely to die of cardiovascular disease than those with cats. Yet dog owners had the same rate as non-owners. "No protective effect of dogs as domestic pets was observed," said the study, which was presented Thursday at the International Stroke Conference in New Orleans.

Cats Help Shield Owners From Heart Attack
Study finds 30% risk reduction when felines are in the home
The finding, from a 10-year study of more than 4,300 Americans, suggests that the stress relief pets provide humans is heart-healthy.
"For years we have known that psychological stress and anxiety are related to cardiovascular events, particularly heart attacks," noted study senior author Dr. Adnan Qureshi, executive director of the Minnesota Stroke Institute at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.
According to Qureshi, the new research shows that "essentially there is a benefit in relieving those inciting factors from pets."
He was slated to present the findings Thursday at the American Stroke Association's International Stroke Conference in New Orleans. Read more…
