Domestic Cat Breeds

Have you always wanted a cat, but heard some breeds make better pets than others? Maybe you have always wanted a cat, but do not know anything about them? There are plenty of ways to learn about cats and what breeds fit your personality. The choice can come from having an indoor, outdoor or indoor and outdoor cat. The tough and smart survive in the out of doors. Small cats are often pray for birds and other wildlife and should be kept indoors. Tomcats, a mixed breed, are great at surviving outdoors and mousers. So let us look at a few breeds of cats and then you will be able to choose which one may be right for your lifestyle.

Siamese: The Siamese cat can be a fickle creature. They often require a lot of attention when they determine it is necessary. They tend to meow quite a bit and can tear up a home if left alone for too long. These are the downsides.  Siamese can be great pets, especially when raised from infancy. They are often white with brown ears and blue eyes.  You may recognize them from Lady and the Tramp? Those two were a little mean and not the typical portrayal of a Siamese. Siamese are generally very affectionate. They are also one of the most intelligent of the cat species. They tend to be very social, which is why they meow or “talk” a lot. A sign for attention is usually a very vocal meow much like a babies cry. Siamese typically bond to one person very strongly and are territorial of that person.

The British Shorthair and The Sphinx

There are many types of cats, you have your exotic cats, you have your domestic tabby cats and then you have your more unusual rare cat breeds. If you are looking for a rare cat breed then you have a few options that your can choose from. Here we will discuss the Sphinx and the British Shorthair, both rare and both very beautiful cats.

Sphinx

The Sphinx is a rare cat breed that you might want to think about and one of the most unforgettable since they are hairless. In fact the Sphinx is not always completely hairless there can be a fine down on the body, similar to that on a newborn baby.

One of the features that make them so extraordinary is the surface of the Sphinx skin. It has been compared to a suede-covered hot water bottle of heated chamois. These are impressive cats which are medium sized and strong. They characteristically have strong boning and superior muscle development and the adult cats tend to be bigger than the female cats.

As well, this rare cat breed requires a particular cat diet, so you are required to make sure that you are feeding them the correct foods if you want them to be healthy and do their best.

British Shorthair

The British Shorthair is another rare cat breed that you may be fascinated in. These are considered as being the oldest English breed of cat, one which was first appreciated for its physical strength and hunting capability.

Persian Cats and Your Allergies

Our Persian cats bring us joy and companionship on a daily basis; however, being a pet owner is never easy. They also require veterinary care, sometimes training, love, attention and even tolerance. Tolerance is especially necessary if you find yourself a Persian cat owner who is allergic to the pet.

Studies reveal that approximately 15 percent of the population is allergic to dogs or cats. It is estimated one-third of Americans who are allergic to cats (which is about two million people) live with at least one cat in their household anyway.

It is clear the benefits of pet companionship outweigh the drawbacks of pet allergies, however, living comfortably with a companion animal despite being allergic to he or she requires a good understanding of the allergic condition and an adherence to a few rules.

Siamese Cats Origins

Siamese cat origins

Despite various other theories about its origin, Siamese cats really did originate in Siam (now Thailand) many hundred years ago. Cats with similar pointed markings feature in the Cat Book Poems, a manuscript saved from Ayuda, the old capital of Siam, which was burned down in 1767. It is the best known of a number of manuscripts that provide a record of the native cats, dogs and birds of the region at that time.

The Siamese pattern was later recorded in Russia by the naturalist Simon Pallas, in 1793. However, the cats he encountered were of much darker colouring. This could be explained by the fact that the Siamese points darken in colder climates. It is not known whether the Russian cats were descended from original Siamese imports, or whether the Siamese gene mutation (now commonly known as the Himalayan gene) had occupied naturally in Russia.

Oriental Cat Facts

The name 'Oriental' does not refer to a specific breed of cat, but a group of cats originating from Southeast Asia. Siamese is the most familiar (specifically, a Siamese without points), but Oriental can also refer to Japanese Bobtail, Burmese, and Balinese to name a few. Oriental cats are either longhaired or shorthaired and come in nearly 300 varieties of colors and markings. Longhairs do not require much brushing of the coat and it does not tend to mat making it one of the lower maintenance longhaired breeds. However, longhair varies are known to have problems with fleas so it is important to introduce baths early on in case a flea bath becomes necessary. Shorthairs have a coat that lies close to the skin and is described as silky.

Other than occasional brushings, it is a low maintenance coat. Orientals are small and lean cats (some can be three feet long), living approximately fifteen years. Mature males will weigh between nine and twelve pounds and females, four to eight pounds. They are described as loud and talkative, as well as curious and intelligent.

Himalayan Cat Care

A is for annual check-ups. Himalayan cat care must include an annual visit to the veterinarian. This can be for a routine check-up, annual vaccinations, and a time to discuss any concerns or issues you may have. If your Himalayan is still a kitten, make sure that you discuss spaying or neutering (if you are going to be having this done) at your initial appointment to ensure that all the shots are up to date before the surgery is scheduled and when the vet recommends the surgery takes place. This is not to say that you should be waiting for your annual appointment if you do have any health concerns regarding your cat, in that case make the call and talk to your vet about when you should bring in your cat.

B is for brushing, and a lot of it. For your Himalayan cat care regimen to be complete, your cat will have to be groomed on a daily basis. This includes a good brushing to keep this long-haired breed’s fur from tangling. You should also schedule a bath at least once per week, if you start bathing your cat when it is a kitten it should get used to this ritual in time (but may never like it).

Persian Cats and Kitten Tips

Probably the first thing you need to do is baby-proof your home. Persian kittens are just like having a new infant in the home. Try getting down on the floor, looking around in about every crook and corner your new Persian kitten could get into. Remove items that could cause harm. Things such as:

• Buttons
• Rubber bands
• Beads
• Electrical cords

Be sure household chemicals are in a secure place away from Persian kitten's little paws. Household plants can be toxic to Persian kittens. You will need to place all household plants in a location too high for him or her to reach. Secure all your fragile and treasured items in places where the Persian kitty cannot reach.

Bambino Kittens

I see alot of people coming to the site looking for information on Bambino Kittens. After spending some time googling the subject I found some information on the Bambino cat.

"The Bambino breed is currently in the developmental stages. Bambinos are currently accepted for registration in the Rare and Exotic Feline Registry (REFR) and are recognized as an experimental new breed by The International Cat Association (TICA)."  See Bambino Cats for more information.

"Bambinos are hairless like Sphynx but have a look of their own and short legs. Bambino cats are not slowed down by their short legs and can get anywhere their long legged cousins, the Sphynx, can! Bambinos are very playful and affectionate.
Read more about Bambinos on our their page."

In contemporary times, cats continue to be a favored house pet due to their intelligence, low maintenance, and warm personalities.
