This book is the current favorite in our household, with a 3-year old and 5-year old who ask for it almost every night. It’s a simple story, well told, with illustrations that are extraordinarily successful at conveying the emotions of the characters, particularly Katie, the dog who just loves those kitties so much, and struggles with impulse control. Highly recommended!

This book is great! I have a daughter who is almost two and we read this book at least five times a week! We have a beagle and Katie reminds us of her and her excitement. I would recommend this to anyone with young children who love animals. I will definitely buy more books by this author!

We ordered this book as soon as we saw it reviewed in The Wall Street Journal. It is just as adorable as described. Katie is such a bundle of love and excitement that she literally cannot control her body. After being scolded repeatedly, she finally gets the returned love she’s been waiting for. The progression of pictures of Katie sulking off to bed after each scolding are priceless. This book makes you feel great. Kids might like it, too!

Himmelman, John. Katie Loves the Kittens. Henry Holt and Company. 2008.
One day, Sara Ann brings home three little kittens. Her dog Katie who howls “AROOOOOO” when she is happy scares the little kittens when she runs to greet them. Sara Ann scolds her and Katie feels very sad. She tries to restrain herself but scares them again. Then she eats out of their food bowls, “She ate the first bowl. Mmmm, this is good, she thought. She ate the second bowl. Yummyummyummyum, she thought.” Poor Katie retreats to her bed and falls asleep. When she wakes up and finds the three little kittens asleep on top of her, she restrains herself from howling. The last picture shows her happily playing with the kittens. This is a simple sweet picture book with charming illustrations that capture nicely Katie’s eagerness to make friends with the kittens and highlight her engaging expressions and movements.

As a children’s librarian, I can’t endorse this book highly enough. And as a soon-to-be mother, I look forward to buying “Katie Loves the Kittens” first for my child’s collection. It’s so precious!
